Music Video Analysis and Song Choice.

Music Video analysis and Song choice.

Here is Goodwins theory on music video construction, this explains how music videos reflect genres and style of music.

Music video Analysis.

Rancid - Red Hot Moon.

This music video follows a performance from the band and the life of a fan/target audience, the person shown in the video is the stereotype of a fan of the band also the band create this image.

The double storyline of the video flows throughout and works very well with the song. The shots used dont just display the bands musical capability (or incapability) it demonstrates that performance shots emphasises the power of the music and the genre. The shot of the fans dancing or "skanking" to the music shows that its an easy going and enjoyable song. The lighting throughout the video changes from dark and red in the club during the perfomance to light and sunny during the bus ride and street shots. The video fits perfectly in with all the genre stereotypes, the stereotypes this band created. The video is a great example of a performance and story hybrid video.

Rage Against The Machine - Testify.
this music video show how well a compilation of clips can work together to create a semi narrative stroyline parralell to a performance sequence. the use of image and lyrical connection is key as the image play out the politically charged lyrics. The story is simple and satirical and follows the bands feeling on the leadership of the united states and uses clips of voice to enhance this. the filming and style of shots are very genre specific, the use of close ups to show true aggresion and the use of long shots for the band also allow the audience to see that this is a rock video with a message. there are also many clips that narrate certain political issues such as the price of petrol, war and lying. There is also a connection when the chorus is sang "testify", this shows important characters such as bill clinton and the pope holding ther hand up as if to say they support the negative themes this video displays.

For my final video and coursework the song I have chosen is Rage Against The Machine - Bullet in the head. My coursework will focus on the attitude of this song and the bands political influence. I have chosen to work by myself for this coursework as the music taste is not for everyone and also I enjoy having full creative control. I will draft an email to send to the band's record company for the approval of song.

The exam board have requested we change the name of the band and song. to meet this requirement I will change the band name to - Rise Against The Machine and the song name to "they say jump". This still has the power and activism that the original has and keeps the attitiude and views of the band also.

As another requirement we have to notify the record company or band about the use of their song, due to the anti establishment nature of the band and the ilusive email adress connected to the band directly I have made a mock e-mail that I would send if able.

music video preliminary

For my music video preliminary task I will be using Liam Lynch's song "united states of whatever". The original music video features the character miming the verses, in seperate settings and costumes. I am changing some aspects of this, such as location and props used.

I chose this song because of the funny lyrical content and imagery this creates, making use for great shots and a great rock feel of rebellion

1. the opening of the songs is "whatever" and goes onto play the guitar riff for 4 bars.
I will start the video and just say "whatever" to the camera close up and focus on facial expression of not caring, reflected in the song title and the lyrics.
2. for the music part of the song I will have people in my band play the seperate parts around in different locations. this will be the same on each 4 bars of music between verses. and I will have people singing the chorus " cus' this is my united states of whatever".

The video that I have produced is not all of the parts to the song as the clip only requires to be 30 seconds or 1 minute.
